Fábio Silva
Integrated Researcher
My academic background lies in fields of computer science, informatics engineering, intelligent systems and artificial intelligence. I have a bachelor’s degree in informatics engineering (2006), a Master of Science in Informatics Engineering (2011), and a Ph.D. in Informatics (2016) with an European Mention from University of Minho, Portugal. I have also frequented advanced training and specialising courses such an Executive Training on Foundations of Governance Information Leadership by the University of Minho and United Nations University (2012), a Summer School on Survey Research: Design, Implementation and Data Processing in the Utrecht University (2014), a Spring School on Logic of Dynamical Systems by the Carnegie Mellon University and University of Minho (2014) and an Advanced Training in Artificial Intelligence applied to the development of digital games, EAIA’2016 – AI for games (2016). I have lectured as an Invited Auxiliary Professor at University of Minho, and I am currently an Adjunct Professor at the School of Management and Technology. I am also the director of the Higher Professional Technical Course in Development for web and mobile devices and a member of the scientific committee of the Industry Business School allows to impact the shaping of professionals and researchers.
I started my scientific research at the ALGORITMI centre in the University of Minho as a PhD student and I am currently since 2016 an integrated member of the CIICESI research centre at Polytechnic Institute of Porto. I have focused on the development of the field of Intelligent Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Industry 4.0 and IoT, Ubiquitous Computing and Gamification. During this period, I have been enrolled in individual grants, national and international projects as a researcher fellow, postdoc research fellow and researcher, contributing the generation of new knowledge, innovation, tools and methodologies for industrial problems in projects such as iFactory, INNOVCAR and Privateer in partnership with both industrial and academic partners. I have also contributed to the enhancement of the quality of life of women with disabilities with the RiseWise project through technological contributions and the development of guidelines to promote the teaching of AI in the Facilitate Project. My research activities include my role as visiting researcher at the University of Castilla-La Mancha.
I have participated in the organizing committee of 2 special sessions, and 7 international workshops. I am also a member of the scientific committee at more than 30 international conferences, workshops and special sessions and a frequent reviewer for scientific journals such as IEEE Internet of Things Journal and Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing. I have also been involved in oral presentations at scientific events as invited speaker in the Data Science Portugal association event, in II International Meeting of Medical Technology and Healthcare Business and event of the international project Serious Games: Developing Emotional Competence in Nursing Students (SG4NS).
Over the years I have supervised researcher during their MSc with 15 completed and 3 ongoing and currently supervising 2 PhD students. Additionally, I have also been involved in external examination boards of 16 MSc in and 1 PhD pre-thesis.
I have authored more than 50 publications, including 12 in scientific journals and publications in book chapters and proceedings of international and national conferences, all indexed (ISI, Scopus, DBLP). This work has generated over 193 citations in Scopus (h-index = 9), 117 citations in Web of Knowledge (h-index=7) and 404 citations in Google Scholar (h-index=13) and common publication with researchers from other national and foreign institutes and universities on different continents.
