CIICESI Joins International Project on Sustainable Public Transportation Optimization with Artificial Intelligence

The project is coordinated by Professor Géremi Gilson Dranka from the Federal University of Paraná (UTFPR) and brings together researchers from four higher education institutions: two Brazilian (UTFPR and UNICAMP) and two Portuguese (Polytechnic Institute of Porto and University of Minho), forming an excellent partnership for the development of innovative solutions for sustainable urban mobility.
From CIICESI, the participation of researcher Wellington Alves stands out, who was directly involved in writing and submitting the proposal and is part of the coordination team, as well as researcher Ana Borges, who will focus on the predictive modeling component using Artificial Intelligence techniques.
The OPTISUS-IA project aims to address the complex challenges of selecting and managing sustainable fleets in public transportation systems, particularly through demand forecasting, route optimization, and operational scenario simulation, supported by Artificial Intelligence techniques, multi-objective optimization (using NSGA-II and SPEA2 genetic algorithms), and simulation tools such as Aimsun Next.
The proposed approach seeks solutions that balance operational costs and CO₂ emission reduction, with the potential to influence the formulation of more effective public policies. The project includes case studies in the cities of Limeira (São Paulo, Brazil) and Guimarães, Portugal, promoting the practical application of the developed solution and its replicability in different urban contexts.
This international collaboration strengthens our center’s commitment to applied, interdisciplinary research focused on sustainability challenges and digital transition.
